This exciting project demanded fantastic levels of attention to detail, clever spatial planning and the ability to work against the tide of a complex, historical building – the “Alexandra Trust Dining Rooms”. Built close to the busy tram and bus junction at Old Street by philanthropist Sir Thomas Lipton, this restaurant once offered very cheap meals to the poor working classes.
To convert this intricate building – into one which allows for ultra-contemporary hotel accommodation and high footfall – required clever use of materials, intuitive circulation for movement and protection from high levels of noise pollution in this vibrant area of London.

Our director worked as part of a small team on five Z Hotel projects whilst at Harper Downie Architects during 2013 and 2014.
